Assemblages of art prints, verses and prose in memory of Tonko Maroević
Galerija Juraj Plančić
11.08.- 15.09.2024
Exhibition opening: Sunday, 11th August at 9pm
It has been four years since the premature departure of our friend Tonk Maroević, a distinguished academic and dedicated member of Matica hrvatska, but above all a benevolent man of Renaissance breadth and undisputed erudition, who helped his native Stari Grad wherever possible. In his honour, the Museum founded a new collection “Tonko Maroević Archive” in 2021, which consists of the graphic maps of the most prominent Croatian visual artists and poets, who collaborated with him, or created artworks as a tribute to him.
This is the third exhibition dedicated to Maroević’s work, which reflects Museum’s efforts to celebrate his legacy. The exhibition “Assemblages of art prints, verses and prose in memory of Tonko Maroević” will open on the eve of the fourth anniversary of his death. For its realization, as well as for the previous two Homage à Tonko exhibitions (in 2021 and 2023), we express our immense gratitude to Mr. Božo Biškupić, a major donor to the Museum and an unsurpassed publisher of first-class books and graphic maps.
The exhibition showcases graphic works from seven graphic maps, created between 1978 to 2002 by Croatian visual artists whose work represent the pinnacle of graphic art in Croatia, especially when it comes to pictorial interpretation of poetic words. For all of them – Nives Kavurić-Kurtović, Dragica Cvek-Jordan, Ivan Lacković Croata, Dimitrije Popović, Matko Trebotić and Albert Cavalieri – Maroević wrote ravishing forewords, which proved to be key values for Croatian 20th century art.
