[THEATRE PLAY] Život je na škoju i radost i tuga


Life on the island is both a joy and a sadnessPetar Hektorović Theatre and it’s children’s workshop will present their new play Život je na škoju i radost i tuga (engl. Life on the island is both a joy and a sadness), on Saturday 5 July at 9pm. Workshop leader was the curator of Stari Grad Museum Vilma Stojković.

The play describes everyday life of an insular town, and covers a time period of 100 years with lots of ups and downs, diseases and wars. Stari Grad, once a mighty port with a large fleet of sailing ships at the end of the 19th century, in the advent of steamships gradually loses its force, while the disease of grapevines and the First World War decimated the population. The first half of the century was marked by two world wars and famine. After the recovery, local population starts to engage in tourism, it is the time of recovery and economic stability. Since the advent of tourism things are happening in the quite ordinary island rhythm…’
